The meeting had, so far, been a success, with no quarrels except for Lotus and Korra butting heads about marehood and how to best serve a herd. With the oncoming night the King's eyes were silvering; the stars popped out faster than usual, bright and distant, and the shadows seemed to grow more compact where he strode. It pleased him that so many had desired new ranks, and with a purpose in his step he approached the group of warriors. He wasn't sure what Deimos felt about being forced into the gathering like this; Mauja just hoped he kept a tight rein on his magic.
Settling in with them, he nodded once to them all, making sure to catch their eye and hold their gazes for a few moments each. They were the guardians of the herd, of the realm, and in times of war, would be the first to bleed and the first to die, ready to give their lives for the others. "You play a very important role in this kingdom," he told them, sincere despite the gratitude and warmth lacing his voice. "Keep your skills sharp. Spar with one another. Guard the borders." He gave them a lopsided grin. "Why, it's quite simple, no? Is there anything either of you wish to ask, about your duties? I trust you well enough to make sure to practice, but if you don't..." He shrugged. If they didn't practice, they died on the battlefield, and wars would be lost - because of them. No need to make them feel guilty in advance. |
