As if mere thought has summoned him, her brother arrives on the morning breeze. The maiden freezes at the sight of him, unsure whether to fight or flee. Not that she would attack him, but their last encounter came dangerously close to verbal assault. And though she has imagined this moment at least a thousand times in her head, she still doesn’t know what to say. He breaks the silence first, and for a moment, she desperately hopes that all is forgiven, but the single word he utters sends those dreams fluttering away like pigeons through a broken window. “Nasreen.” Not Reeni, not sister, but Nasreen. The absence of his pet name wounds her, and instinctively, she begins to wilt beneath his gaze. After all, that’s what Reeni would do, the silly little sister who played games and braided hair and who hadn’t a care in the world. But just as her head begins to lower, a spark lights in her chest. If she is no longer Reeni to him, why should she act like her? She is no little girl now, no pesky tagalong—she has a position now, for heavens’ sake, and she’s managing just fine on her own!
The young pegasus raises her head, forcing herself to look her brother in the eye. “Quilyan,” she replies, in a voice that’s a little strained. His name sounds foreign on her tongue, for in all her life, she has never addressed him in so formal a manner. She pauses, gaining her composure. “I haven’t seen you in weeks. Are you well?” Coming from her, the words sound stern, though she has merely borrowed the civilities of standard court manners.
But strange and awkward as this meeting is, the princess is secretly pleased with herself—why, how grown up she sounds! Maybe Quilly—Quil—no, Quilyan will see that she is no longer a child. It’s something he may have realized sooner, she thinks a little bitterly, if he had been around to take a look.
