The land could at last breath easy. Summer fire and brimstone given way to a cool stream of relief. Leaves in the excitement had already begun to throw a festival of color about the more northern lands. The landscape would ready for winter soon to be sure, but for now it was a celebration in the passing of the dead heat. Birds flirted and deer flirted about the fields in the late afternoon. Full hearts and last blissful moments before winter. That hard time seemed years in the future, just as the rising clouds seemed miles away. The temptress summer was not so joyous. Her green lands, and lavish sun filled days gone she rose her thunderheads once more. The clouds so far away, so distance from the mind came charging into battle, rising ever higher with threat. Summer would have her last revenge on the peace of the day.

Winds tore across the fields and though the trees. Contented creatures trembled with remembrance and took the warning well, scurrying to borrow and rock to hide. Rolling, rising clouds pushed through and blocked out the last remints of the fine autumn day. From then on, lightening would light the scene, and light it did. Crashing, rolling, and tearing across the plains and forests tore summer’s last furry. It rivaled all her previous dabbles in the weather in its ferocity and doom. All knew well to hide, and so the lightening lit only the empty plains, that is until he stepped forward, golden coat shinning like the sun reflecting the lightening back at the skies.

It was not his near unbreakable pride, and invincibility that had carried the golden out into this rage of a storm. No, as lightening flashed upon his rain haloed, wind torn features the gold is seem, near staggering, with head pulling low. This is not the same creature who stood tall and proud before a lord and lady, nor a smooth sly snake which tricked the mighty. This was a much older creature, a much more troubled stallion. Where others run a hid, clinging to love and self at every crack of the storm, he barely flinches. Was he asking for death? Was he deaf to the thunders of the world? Did some foreign force carry him far away from reality? Had all sense left his oh so powerful mind? Perhaps, it is all at once.

Birthdays were meant to be happy occasions. Celebrate your life with loved ones, and all that you have accomplished. It should have been happy, not a raging thunderstorm hell bound. Not alone. Not a reminder of all failures distances forgot. Gold body quivers, but it’s not the rain or cold. It’s the ache. The memories themselves raging inside him could not be equaled by any storm pounding that golden hide.

Escaping death was meant to be a happy occasion. Freedom from oppression, and a second chance to remake wrongs. It should have lifted his shackles, not doubled them. Not drowned him. Not a funeral over those broken things such as chains, hearts, and justice. But it was. It was a hell the bound him in bars. It locked his golden ways away with only a single memory. It drug him through storms, and carried him to places he rarely sought. His heart.

A cruel joke of nature to replay exactly the hells of memories. To match day with weather, too bring memories too close to the surface. The golden had made a new life here, beyond all the past. Such pains had been taken to forget and remember no more of that version of golden man. Now to have it rain down on him harder than the storm’s touch could be nothing more than torture. He had moved on, regained himself. His mind was a powerful, cunning king. It had rid itself of any traces lingering of honor, worthiness, and sacrifice. Why could his heart not forget such a simple feeling as love for a girl and child?

Teeth ground deep and golden legs finally halted. Breaths became pained. Wind ripped across his frame, tearing mercilessly at those fine white locks. Twin horns remain solid though, oblivious to the rage around him for the rage inside. At last, the temptress summer could take this creature’s insolence to her might no longer. CRACK. Lightening ran not a mile from the gold and it woke him. Perhaps her might was blessing, for little wake from such pains on their own. Wide earth eyes searched for light, only catching glimpses of his world through the light of death striking the earth. It was not panic, no hard emotions could rise from that weary soul, but it had at least opened it once more. Stopped the black hole from falling in. Golden body moved with a sleek stealth across the mud ridden meadow to a thick outcropping of trees.

Whole body shook with force, before raising that Spanish head to look back out. Gold dusted eyes could hardly believe what he had crossed, but again, they were diluted and weak feelings. Sides heaved heavily, mind and soul would mend again. It would take another healer though. Perhaps one to remind him that the life he left in the rain, was washed away in the strength of a new one. No, those chains would never go away. The ache never heal. The black hole never close. But they could be put aside and forgotten. It was a distraction. That’s all he needed, a distraction.

We’re born with millions of little lights shining in the dark
And they show us the way
One lights up
Every time you feel love in your heart
One dies when it moves away
Its getting dark in this heart of mine.
