Ampere the Mother of Companions

Ophelia's recounting of her event did not disturb Ampere as much as it normally would have. In some way she expected it to be awful, so when the pale mare started, she braced herself, her imagination running wild with darkness and death. It was certainly more of a forthright scene compared to angry worms and fiery prophecies. Still, it was not an attack. Even the worms were said to have blown away... so what was the point?

Warnings, but for what? What could they do to stave off what was being warned about?

Ophelia thought similar, and Ampere nodded in turn to her assessment, but continued to wonder why. Anxiously she bit at her lip, thoughts racing behind her eyes which looked distantly at the shrines. If only the gods would help... Why won't they help?

The Mother of Companions' attention redirected to the Forsaken, surprised at the willpower that inserted itself in her words. The pale maiden did not look it at first glance, but she was fierce, just in a quiet sort of way. Where was Ampere blazed like a fire or struck as lightning, inherently wild and dangerous, Ophelia glinted soft and gentle, a blade in the dark, and mind worn sharp, something you didn't know to fear until it cut you.

"Water and power delivered by the gods, were they not?" Ampere murmured as Ophelia's gaze looked to heaven's floor. "Hoof, horn, and wing alone did nothing against the dark tide. Our mortality could never have been so apparent, so useless." She did not often think of her magic as anything other than her's, but her latest visit to the God of the Earth had left her with some new ideas. He admitted he existed as part of everything (was he listening now, too lazy or too unkind to appear?), and suggested his brother for her magic. Was she anything but part of them, a lesser part?

She could defy them, the gods. She could live, if they permitted. Yet she could not defeat them, could not fight their divine battles, not when her weapons were all blunted edges wrought from flesh. Ampere needed that, weapons, because whatever cleverness Ophelia relied upon she felt she desperately lacked. These visions, or warnings, or whatever they were didn't seem to have any meaning or purpose other than fear to Ampere. Did the Forsaken see more in them?

"If you consider his potential at its limit, how do you not consider the same of yourself, of all of us?" Ampere persisted, disheartened to hear the dragon was done growing. "We have free minds," to that she could admit, their will was uncontested, but was it enough? "Yet they are trapped inside a restricted body."

Ampere thought of a time before, when a creature had risen from the depths of the enflamed gorge and risen to destroy all in its path. It had been a desperate struggle to fell the beast, and it had come at great cost to all involved, her badly burned legs but one of countless injuries. Alone she could never have survive, but together they had all brought it down, all on their own. That memory gave her hope, but she could not shake the shadow of the wraith attacks that clutched onto her like a fever. They had assembled together then too, but still they had failed, rescued only by the gods which now abandoned them in this darkening hour.
"Together we can accomplish more, but is it ever enough? Are we ever truly together in this world?"

Ampere looked away. She did not want to hear about the dragon and his misery, veiled with bonded happiness. Even the way she said it, Mirage's gold dragon, as if any creature could belong to another. What if the silver and gold were free and in love at this very moment?

It was Ophelia's last comment however, that struck the match to Ampere's kerosene. Troubled enough by the ominous, though unknown threat on the horizon, then smothered with this companion bond, the first of all she had encountered and foolishly loved, she was saturated with fuel for her fire.
"Of course you do," Ampere snapped, her head jerking around, eyes burning as they set upon Ophelia. "You cannot help but feel for him since he's bound to your soul forever more. Don't feign sorrow on his behalf when you are what stands between his happiness, his freedom!" The butterflies grew erratic and distorted, fluctuating with her rising energy. Her fight was coming back, thank the gods. "It's bad enough he's limited in body, but you've gone and tethered his soul too, despicable," Ampere spat, the speech like venom gushing from her teeth. Her feathers flared against her back and she took one bold step towards the Forsaken, ears sliding against her neck.
