Where it lay crouched between the dunes of the wide-stretched beach the young cougar was nearly invisible. Its coat of burned yellow and brown melted in perfectly with the pallor of the sand, and where it was positioned the wind would not be able to reveal its presence. It was a small individual, still carrying the lankiness of a yearling and with the youthful arrogance that seemed to infect the brains of all teenagers. He had left his mother only a season ago, and now with the cooler weather the feline had made his way down from the mountainous regions, lured by the unfamiliar scents that surrounded the beach.

Piercing golden eyes now followed the path of the winged mare with intense interest as she passed between his location and the sea. Large paws kneaded the sand as the inexperienced hunter collected his legs beneath himself. The long, thick tail swished intensely from side to side, then grew still. He focused, concentrated, eyes narrowing as he gathered all his strength and waited for just the right moment... The shrill cry of a seagull distracted him for a moment and made him sit up somewhat as it flew by. Then he remembered what he was doing and without a second thought the predator lunged forth from his hidden spot. Teeth bared and claws stretched out, he charged right towards the unsuspecting horse from the side, hoping to trap her between himself and the sea.
