It wasn't included in his calculation that she would move, that she would do anything but succumb to his predatory supremacy. But she did, and as the rump of the mare swayed to the left and lashed out towards the place where she thought he might be, the distance between him and his target increased. Desperate to reach her the young lion stretched, feeling the paws make contact with her warm skin, dampened from the strain and the fear. His body smacked into hers with a force that made the air wheeze out of his lungs, and by some miracle he managed to hang on to her back, hanging halfway down the lower right side of the mare rather than over her flank, just behind the feathered wing.

It wasn't a good place to be. Clawed hind feet pawed against her leg and the ground and her belly, trying to find support to strengthen the grip. As she began to buck he felt the grip loosen up once more, his body was flung from side to side like a sand-colored rag, and with the pain of the weakened left leg eating away at his strength the cougar soon let go, landing into the sand and at once gathering for a new leap, a third try...

He didn't see the stallion arrive. He was taken completely off guard as the two-colored equine charged at him and smacked him with the full force of both hooves directly into the right side of the ribcage. The motion transferred to the young cat and sent it flying back several strides in a cascade of loose sand, hollering and wheezing at the sensation of something snapping within. Bruises formed beneath the skin, it panted for air and tried to come to terms with what had happened and scramble to the feet at the same time. Now there were two of the horses. Two opponents, both strong and healthy, alert of his presence. He was injured. The shoulder ached with a possible fracture on the bone, and a rib had most likely snapped. Hesitation began to dawn in the eyes of the large feline, and as he stared at the grazers with angry eyes he hissed, baring the sharp teeth and hitting the air in their direction. Maybe if he could scare the newcomer away, maybe the mare was more injured than he had thought...
