The horses weren't intimidated by his waving paw, and the hesitation within the feline grew. Should he feel insulted, disappointed, or even a little frightened? He hissed, pain keeping him from charging in and hunger stopping him from turning around. He lingered, hesitated, looked between the two grazers. Then it was as if though the flames of a wildfire had enveloped him. He had seen fire burn in the forest before, knew of the orange burning tongues that painted everything black that it touched. He understood the searing heat that burned its skin; it made the lion scream from terror and pain, suddenly writhing and turning to make it stop, get the imagined fire away so that it wouldn't hurt anymore. It was a horrible sound that pierced through skin and bone, struck notes on the very core of the soul; it wasn't a sound easily forgotten, one that might haunt soft hearted beings during lonely nights.

In its wild attempts to flee this nightmarish situation, where a simple hunt had turned dangerous and frightening, the cougar slipped out of reach of the winged mares attack. Her hooves fell down like rocks from a cliff and landed just before the lion, tossing sand up high in the air. It recoiled, all but blinded by its pain, and with a final longing thought to the meal that could have been the young creature spun around and ran.

Burned, bones broken and fearing for its life, it was highly unlikely that it would dare to attempt horse meat for dinner one more time. That, or the young mind would begin to plan, healing and waiting for a chance to exact revenge on the feathered mare...
