Exploring without Rikyn and Erebos was a new task for her, and one that she took upon herself with a measure of purpose. In order to solve the mystery of the dead pegasus, she would have to learn the land and those who lived in every hidden corner, and that meant leaving the Aurora Basin now and then. To the north was only mountains and snow, so bitter cold and treacherous that anyone who lived there could just stay there for all she cared. Small, childish bones carried her south through dense woods and snow filled trees.

Everything was covered in white, as if the universe was making a vain attempt to purify the world. Well, she knew better. The world was a wicked place, and those within it had wicked hearts. One day, she would be there to condemn them with her father's power, but the future was still just dreams, distant like the sun was now behind clouds and pale skies. As it rose, she barely felt the heat from the light anymore, and she shivered, frowning.

Aithniel tucked her small wings into her sides, watching the snow part for a beautiful, tranquil pond in the middle of some trees. Some of these actually kept their leaves in big, vine-like ropes, and the shrubs looked like they would be pretty with flowers. A peaceful place like this warranted a break, and she drank the water, trying to ignore the sharp pains of cold hitting her warm insides.

The sound of hooves crunching on the snow caught her attention, and she pushed her ears back on her skull, quickly trotting behind a tree to hide. The child peeked from around the girth of the old bark, molten silver eyes catching a side that made her heart flip flop around in her chest like a dying fish. She didn't know what to feel as emotions hit her in confusing waves, and she swallowed as if they would keep the tears from rising to her eyes.

She knew her. This one was there when she was born, even though the memories were foggy. Her coat matched the bright sun, and Aithniel wanted to cry out. Part of her knew that this was not her mother, because she hungered for such a long time, but she had been there. The child couldn't say anything, words strangled in her throat. All she could do was stand and stare, hoping with such opposite strength that she would be seen and go unnoticed at once.
