Ocean crashed on a cold empty surf. I’d risen early and traveled to the far side of our valley before the sun had risen, I’d come with every intent to scout, but ended up doing nothing of the sort. I don’t honestly know why I’d been pulled to this vacant beach, but here I stood. Staring out across the foam. My mind reeled with memories of a warmer time – years back when I’d felt like a young buck and not the old man this position head created. My soul was worn out, I was tired of trying. Tired of this world and its needless pain.

“How long?” quiet words came as a raspy whisper, meant for no one aside from Fina and perhaps the gods themselves. How long till what? The chilling wind quaked in return. My somber firechild nudged her head into the silken folds of my mane, she pushed against the hair and gently nipped fur.

“Midas?” an unspoken question hung between. Yon child would follow me to the ends of earth. Ebony crown shifted to regard her with one glazed honey eye. For many long moments I simply regarded her, saying nothing. She straightened and gazed over the horizon, “We could leave.”

My parents had been from a nomadic tribe; it was in my blood to desire travel, to desire adventure.

Nay, my soul replied gently from its core. Not yet anyways. One day though, I promised her silently, while shifting my attention back to the sea. One day we will travel across this body of water and into the unknown. To either die or find our own quiet paradise. A land without trouble or grief.

There were other worlds than these.

Eventually I left, to return to duties that were expected of a man in my position. Returning to the drag and danger of everyday life in a world for of fools. We flew back in silence, enjoying the company of each other without words. Our timing was perfect, we arrived just in time to see Rostislav escorting yet another newblood into our home. A lovely female with a sooty hide and alabaster locks that reminded me of snow. Damaris, the hellhound that was often close to heel stood near Rostislav, eyes searching the sky and nose grazing the ground. Obviously searching.

I spun low, angled toward earth and landed at a brisk canter in an open clearing. I caught her words, questioning his position and family responsibilities, my lips curled into a loose smile that allowed small traces of humor to come forward, “Yar, our Legatus is mated to his work.” Gaze shifted to him with a rare shine of playfulness kissing both corners higher, “As for children, he has a herd full of soldiers to tend to.”
