Nasreen is frantic. Why, oh why, had she ever left? She’d gone off, flying to the far west in hopes of finding Th’orqui, when she’d been blown off course by the Frostfall storms. For once, the girl had made the wise decision to postpone her search until spring, but by then it was too late. She’d had to make much of the journey back to the Edge on foot, and with the massive drifts, it had taken weeks. The weather was miserable, the food was scarce, and she had been alone most of the time, but she could have dealt with that had it not been for the rumors. For the few travelers she had encountered had told her things, dreadful things about darkness and murder that had her unable to sleep at night. Now, she was nearly exhausted, for when the stories had grown too numerous to doubt, she’d begun to run—and she hadn’t stopped until she was safely within the borders of the Edge. Did Kahlua and Kaj know about this? She must speak with them right away! Wide-eyed and nervous, the girl moves quickly through through the snow, trembling with fear and fatigue. Then, somewhere in the trees a twig snaps, and the princess feels her heart stop. She freezes in her tracks, eyes squeezing shut, and without meaning to, she flings a prayer to the heavens: Lady Moon, save her!
