It was time. Time for something new. The arrival of Birdsong had solidified the need for change.

Satisfied, Syrena had left the pond where she had wintered at. It was a bountiful season – in the depth of the cold it was easy to lure others with the idea of a warm swim and the promise of a union with her on the other end. Fools, the lot of them. Not one had made it halfway across the water she kept warm enough just to avoid freezing, warm enough that the plants could still grow – ensnare – kill.

But as good as that pond had been to her, she had been growing restless for some time and the stationary life had never suited her well. Onward, ever onward, until this world ran out of ponds and rivers and lakes. Onward until she and her sisters were all that were left and they would fade into sea foam at the end of the world.

Now, though, now she was simply on the move. She would travel toward the setting sun this time, far as she could.

It was dawn on her third day of travel when she slowed her pace, when she started to feel like it was time to choose and set up. She was in a dense forest, the dead pine branches grabbing at her hair as she passed by them try as she did to avoid them.

She certainly did not know that she had stumbled into a unique, new land, did not know the costs that it would have for crossing that border, but the scent of horses was unmistakable. This area was inhabited, unlike many of the ones she had been to. That boded well and a ghost of a smile appeared in those dark eyes as she looked around. There simply had to be a pond or a lake where she could set herself up.

At an easy, slow pace the dark grey mare searched in the early morning light as it filtered through the trees - catching the texture of her coat and making it look as though it were sleek with water though no rain had fallen. Above them stretched a blue sky promising a warm day but Syrena did not care to notice – the weather mattered little to her until droughts occured. All that mattered for her, in that moment, was her search.
