Lakota
Her smile makes you wonder where she's been

There is hardly any time for her to recover, as little as she desires to stall. If she pushes onward there is little time to doubt, to wonder and fear and percolate on the possibilities. Instead she leaned subtly into Ktulu's touch, taking strength from the gentle touch, the ghost of warm breath that caressed her skin. Familiar, comforting. She doesn't bother to nod, merely giving a soft noise of assent. "I'm fine. Just frustrated I guess." Not nearly as much as Ktulu, clearly, but the cherry mare had a different, more complex relationship with the celestial being that was orchestrating their quest. Was she disappointed? No, Lakota doubted it. Ktulu was not the type to place false hope and belief into someone like the Earth God, to be subservient or eternal in her loyalties to a being that was guaranteed to work against Ktulu's personal desires when called upon for his "greater good" duties. It was likely she was angered to have been put in a situation where she not only could have hurt Lakota, but was instinctively urged to. Lakota was aware the harsh warrior still held guilt in her heart for the scar she'd given Lakota, the pain she'd caused as a wraith. Her own anger simmered like a boiling pot for a similar reason; protectiveness. Wasn't that proof of their love? That they would feel such intense anger for the God for hurting the other, rather than themselves? Because the sapphire nurse hated him in that moment, for making her mate relive what Kota had fought to get her to let go.

There was hardly any time for laughter before the pain is upon her again, and she whimpers this time, the sensation worse while she was still sore and recovering from changing back already. When she opens her eyes, everything is different, but beneath her gaze is a fawn. Hunger and instinct clench in her bones, and new claws unsheathe, fangs glinting and tail thrashing with the nearness of her prey. Just as she is coiling for the pounce, her heart jolts. It's more painful than anything she's ever experienced, and with a yowl of agony she threw herself bodily away from the figure she at last recognized as her mate.

While she can still control herself, Lakota scrambled for the nearest tree, letting her new body's instincts take hold as she clawed upward. Desperate, nearly deranged, scoring up the bark as she hauled herself up to the higher branches and clung tight to a moderately thick one. She feels like vomiting, like someone has taken a shredder to her insides, has injected her own poison straight into her heart. It hurts, it hurts, it hurts!

She gags and sobs, shuddering on the branch with the intensity of her own suppressed emotions. The shock of what she'd nearly done cripples her barriers. Why would the God change her while she was tangled in Ktulu's embrace? Why would he put Ktulu in such immediate danger? Did he know Lakota's love would catch her in the nick of time? But she nearly hadn't. Her body had been too new, her disoriented state too strong, her mate too close. Far worse than the previous trial, where they'd been separated first.

Her own horror seizes her, until she is shaking and choking, the branch her only comfort. Words refuse to come to her, but she is making pathetic sounds of pain and fear that no tiger (much less someone like her) should be making. She's scared to look down, scared Ktulu would hate her, or worse would fear her. New vocals shake and she croaks out her love's name, broken and clearly revealing the intensity of her pain, her sudden tidal wave of self-loathing. "K-Ktulu?"
