LACE

Who, in his mind,

has not probed the dark water?

The voice of the golden queen tore through the thunder and the wind and immediately caught the attention of her smallest kin. White wings gleamed and glistened with the purity of snow as she rose higher into the air, joyfully greeting the other dragon and welcomed her into the game. She allowed the leather membranes to fold tight against her slender body and dived down towards the foaming sea, zigzagging through the dales between the waves until she met with one of the giant walls of water that now and then rose up from the raging surface. Then she unfurled the strong appendages, climbed the wind up, up until she could snap at the foaming tip; and just before it could break down and trap her in the deadly torrents she broke away, chirping and crying in a way that reminded of laughter. Feeling brave and strong, the little dragon challenged her larger playmate to beat her, get closer, stay longer in the ever changing labyrinth. She wrapped around the queen in the air, teased and dared her to try, not minding the knowledge that she probably would loose. It was completely beside the point.

Maybe it was the increase of noise around him, or perhaps the flash of gold that glimmered and shone in front of his eyes that alerted him to the arrival of others. Time and time again it appeared, gold and white, gold and black, then black and white, before the flicker of color teased his senses so much that he was pulled away from the endless circle he had locked himself in. It continued to roll within him, numbing the mind and clouding his thoughts; but at least he could feel the splash of water upon his skin again, felt the whipping wind that tore at the tassels and chilled his body almost to the point of numbness. The water was cold, he realized. It slushed and hissed around his knees, clambered up to the elbows and drenched his chest and shoulders; he had to fight to free his dark legs from the sand, before quickly pulling back a bit from the deep holes that had formed. He watched numbly as they quickly filled with a mixture of sand and water. If only the emptiness within him could be filled as easily...

Another flash of gold made the stallion blink and turn the head towards the playing dragon. No, dragons, because it seemed that Fajira had found a friend. Lace boggled at the risk the two were taking in their reckless game of dare, felt like he should tell his light to be careful. Then he reconsidered and sighed once more, shook the masked head and shuddered in the cold wind. Following them with amber eyes, he felt that there was something familiar about the golden one. He had never met many horses with a dragon bond, and the only one so far had been...

Slowly the blue dun let his gaze sweep along the shoreline, waiting for the flash of the lightnings to reveal anything of importance. Not that he really expected to find her. He remembered well the darkness of her coat and the ease with which she had slipped close to him before revealing her presence at their last meeting. Mirage was as elusive as her name suggested, and the reason for her presence here evaded him. Perhaps it was a coincidence? There might be nothing to it at all, but Lace wasn't going to drop the possibility that she had sought him out with something in mind.

For a moment he closed his eyes. Did he want to see her right now? The thought of trying to hold up a conversation felt exhausting, but somehow the choice of being left alone again was even worse. He had no resilience today, but neither was he in a mood to give in to anything. His heart was bitter and wary, closed to any and all. Mirage was interesting, no doubt, but he didn't trust her.

Golden eyes not unlike her own opened once more and searched the shadows, longing for a hint of where she might be, a glimpse of her dark figure. Maybe if he saw her the grulla would know what to do, perhaps his soul would calm down enough to at least offer her a greeting.
