has not probed the dark water?

Wariness, caution, tension. The stallion read like an open book, too shook up to even think of hiding his emotions. He might have grown considerably since the day when he casually strolled into the Gateway of Isilme and claimed himself a warrior, but it was doubtful whether he would ever grow jaded enough to remain calm in front of something like this. The approach of Akaith and subsequently also Fajira did little to soothe him. They could be unsettling enough with fire and claws and ferocious temper, and only served as a hint at what this beast might be capable of. He wasn't soothed by the amused look on the dragons face as she avoided his question; if anything it rekindled his irritation, made the ears clip upon the masked head. He never appreciated being made fun of, and if this indeed was Mirage she was approaching him in a damned strange way.

His suspicion was more or less confirmed by the question - or rather statement - that followed, but it did little to reassure the stud. With the pale mane whipping in the strong wind he glared at her, gilded eyes piercing the blackness of the storm to meet the slitted gaze of Mirage.

"Apparently so, at least for you" he said wryly. Was this some kind of joke to her? Well, he wasn't laughing. "I, on the other hand, haven't noticed much of a change in anything. The seasons, perhaps." He had no wish to talk about the ones he had met during their time apart, or the things he had seen. None of them changed anything, nothing would erase the black abyss that always waited within his mind.

Lace shook his head, eyes closing for a moment as he held back a sigh. Why was he even being gruff towards her? It was his own damn fault that he had been startled, his own problem whether he was locked in a circle of depression that seemed impossible to break free from. It had nothing to do with her. When he opened his eyes again and looked back towards the shape-shifter the grulla suddenly looked tired, the empty void that slowly consumed his mind spilling out into the shadows through the eyes. It was the eyes of someone that was growing tired of fighting, who was on the verge of giving up. Maybe the event of the past could seem like a silly thing to torment oneself over, but for Lace it was dead serious. He had struggled, did so still, but on his own it was a slowly loosing battle and only Fajira had managed to keep him on the right side so far.

"What are you doing here, Mirage?" he asked, only half caring about the answer. "Is your Qian really such an idle bunch that you have time to play on the beach?" If she had come to recruit him she would have to think again. Lace didn't mind playing games, but there were better times and better places than this. Maybe a rainy day in the Deep Forest would have seen him in a better mood, one more suitable for cat-and-mouse games of wit and words. Today was not a good day.
