LACE

Who, in his mind,
has not probed the dark water?

It was apparent that his words touched a nerve with the dragon mare. It had half been his intention when bringing up the Qian in the first place. Lace wasn't stupid, he remembered well the burst of emotion that had escaped the last time he dared talk about the organization. But even as the face of the golden beast before him grew sullen and the rumbling growl resounded from her throat, the stallion felt no pleasure from managing to get to her. Her pain would never give him anything but more guilt to add to his load - and that, if anything, was what made him do it. There lay a grim satisfaction in the pang of regret that struck him, and the bitter smirk that pulled on his ebony lips made the White let out a cry of dismay. She was not proud over his behavior, and neither was he.

Truth be told, the silver grulla that stood before the WeyrLeader was a mess. Emotions and thoughts were tumbling all over one another within his mind and the harsh words that spilled from his lips was but a desperate attempt at keeping it all hidden. Offense was the best defense and he was desperately trying to keep her at a distance, make sure that the mare of black and gold with this dragons heart wouldn't get too close.

He gritted his teeth and stared quietly back at her, the defiance that gleamed in his gaze almost childish in the stubborn refusal to give in. He suspected that her talk of change was directed towards him - and it wasn't very surprising, really. The stallion that stood before her now was almost the complete opposite of the suave, smooth gentleman she had encountered in the Threshold. Then he had been in control, his emotions had been kept firmly in check. But she had begun to crack that mask of indifference by speaking of Isilme, and his encounter with Paladin sometime afterwards had only served to widen the crack. Lace had never once believed that he would meet others from his former homeland again, and the thought of running into someone that might know of his sins was unbearable.

"Reason have little to do with some things" he retorted. "I don't see why it should be any of your business.. Or are you trying to say that you actually care about me?" There was a bitter irony in the tone of his voice that clearly showed how unlikely he found the thought to be.

Ah, it was cold. The chill of the storm, the frost in his words and the icy bubble that separated him from everything that should be meaningful. All of it together sent a shiver through the gray stallion as he kept rejecting Mirage, inwardly crying over every harsh word he threw at her.
