Fall behind

Torleik might not have been so good at sneaking and conniving, lying and laying traps, but he was not a fool - and as far as he could tell, this imbecile found him as such. And then a thought occurred to him. Why not let this moron think him stupid? Why not play into the stereotype of the unintelligent brute? But would his pride let him? The rabicano was unsure he could keep up the act. Could he out maneuver a snake? That was not his skill; he was a straightforward man, one who did not gild himself with lies and falsehoods as his armor.

No. He would only end up looking more like a fool were he to try to play this stallion. So he waited patiently, watching this golden snake coil himself up in preparation for whatever strike he thought was clever and brilliant. Sensitive though he might be beneath his thick hide, Torleik was not easily rattled. "Truth, hn," the rabicano hummed, amused, letting Thranduil continue as he wished. These blowhards, they had to feel in control, feel like the situation was theirs to direct as they wished.

He asked what position the light colored male held and listened to the answer, considering it in his mind for a short while. Torleik was not aware of any scholars in the Basin, and no scholar, no lowly rank such as that, would be recruiting in the Threshold. The soldier smirked and said in a calm, level voice, "No you aren't." He didn't know what Thranduil was, but he was not a scholar. A scholar would know how to use their words, know how to tell a story, draw someone in. He was more of a scholar than this self-important brat.

A single, scarred brow rose when this thing told him he had no right to disrespect him because it was the soldiers who gave the Basin a bad name. "Our threats and violence? No, child, it is the racist leaders this herd has been subject to that give the Basin a bad name now. Perhaps in the past, when raids were common, you could say that about the soldiers, but not as of late."

Giving Thranduil a little smile, Torleik shifted to a more comfortable position on his feet. "You would do well to hone your wordcraft," he offered. "I don't have to like you to want you to be useful to our herd," he grunted, "and if you think for a moment that making wild promises to recruit someone to the Basin is the way to go then gods help us, never recruit again. You have to give them some truth sprinkled amongst the hope so that when they're let down - and they will be someday - they can look back and say you didn't lead them astray; you gave them what you could."
