[ Because I am a sucker for IC conclusions to every thread, yes. ]

It was a drum-beat of destruction, a loud crack and boom rocking and splitting the world upon which they stood; the creature was abominably strong, each swing of that club a death-sentence for any unlucky enough to get caught underneath it. Mauja winced each time it struck the ice beneath them. He could almost feel it split in his heart, neat fractures mixing with ruins and craters—and each time the voice within boomed louder, not her, not her, not her.

Not that he had to worry—she was right beside him, and.. Myrrine was in front of them, a small, living shield made of flesh and courage.

Not her, either, his heart whispered fervently.

What had happened to him? Once, he had ruled their home, and he had been as cold as these glaciers, as uncaring, and their lack of a horn would've spelled out their end for them anyway. The yeti would've been the perfect ruse to cover up his crimes.

And yet there he stood, blue eyes snapping this way and that, his heart pounding all the way up in his throat because he did not want to lose them.

Turns out he had a heart after all.

The world came apart in a burst of light.

Eyes snapped shut, and, startled, he lost touch with his magic—only the dark hunger remained somewhere beneath his heart, an ache in the back of his throat, a wolf's breath coming just half a second behind his own. Slabs of ice collided painfully with his chest, his side, his haunches, a brutal reminder of his own fragility (and a shitload of pending bruises). When he opened his eyes again, the glow, the light he had wanted so badly, was gone; only cracks remained in the thick glacial ice, wounds and scars caused by their mortal greed.

And the creature was lumbering away, looking confused and hurt. Mauja could smell its blood—and his own guilt.

He had helped cause this.. these fractures, these shards of ice strewn about, and even if his birds of fire had not reached the beast, his very presence had helped injure it.

"Let it go," he called, tiredly—it was not innocent either, but the disappearance of the light had seemed to mollify its aggression. "There's nothing more for us here."

And with that, he turned to nose Kahlua, and leave.
