"What do you have there, son?"... is what Arrakk would have loved to ask the big young stallion, in a confident and nonchalant way that would suggest that he wasn't very interested (even though he nearly imploded from curiosity) and that the conversation was merely a politeness from his part as it was really not his style to be lurking about, spying on other people's business.

Alas... He didn't have the confidence to say anything. Instead the tall, awkwardly built unicorn remained in his hiding place in a dense shrub some distance away from the remains of the bird - and subsequently from the colt - lurking and bashing himself for being such a wuss that the sound of footsteps had made him jump for cover. That his shelter was less than adequate to hide someone of his height or pallid coloration completely slipped his mind. Arrakk was used to being ignored, so much so that he had this childish notion that if he remained quiet and still and didn't speak, others would simply pass him by and leave him alone.

Usually it worked, but it was very hard to maintain that low profile when something interesting clearly was going on up ahead. Knobbly knees rustled the leaves of the thicket as he shifted his weight back and forth, and without being fully conscious of it the unicorn craned the neck higher and higher to peer over the lush foliage, almost as thrilled by the faint tapping sound as the young brute.

That his antlers (about the only thing on his lanky, skinny body that actually looked impressive) and a good part of the spotted nose became clearly visible was more than he knew. He was far too enthralled by the digging and the appearance of an egg; how exciting! Arrakk had never seen the hatching of an egg before, it positively gobbled up his attention and left room for nothing else.
