"Who are you?" The question was posed by a mare only a few years older than she: a varnished roan set on a chestnut pelt, accented by blue eyes and a frosted horn. They were of a similar build, or would be once the girl matured. She took this in with amber eyes that looked the mare up and down with a tinge of disdain, a look taught by her mother and mastered quickly. In truth, she wasn't sure how else to react to this new unicorn - having never been taught proper manners, she could recognize rudeness neither in herself nor anyone else, nor would she particularly care even if she could. The mare was lovely in an icy sort of way, returning her inspection with a similar look. It almost seemed that the sight of the filly was distasteful to her, as though Själ had interrupted some important errand or thought; but such contempt was lost on the snow-touched filly. Who am I? she thought, a tinge of outrage beginning to grow in her breast. Shouldn't this peasant know her rightful princess when she saw her? Should she not bow down to the royalty which so kindly presented itself to her? Shouldn't she be leaping for joy that she, of all the inhabitants of Helovia, had been blessed by Själ's presence? But in the back of her mind, the lingering thought presented itself: just who was her mother, and who did that make the self-proclaimed Queen's daughter? Was the Empress's legacy all that she had promised, or had Själ's journey to Helovia only set her up for disappointment? "Själ," she asserted regally, as though the mare should have already known as much. She refused to believe that her mother had been so ma as to lie about her heritage. There must have been some mistake - this mare would obviously recognize her in just a moment and apologize profusely for the misunderstanding. "Who are you?" she countered, a challenge in her eyes. "Talk."  |
