from the dusty mesa her looming shadow grows
hidden in the branches of the poison creosote

Her mother's companion squawked his complaints as Mordecai drifted farther and farther from her newly crowned mother. Sultana. Khaleesi. Queen. The young girl was still learning, but she was confident that Khaleesi was the word to describe her mother. And if her mother was a queen then that made her a Khalakki. A princess. She found herself quite fond of the idea of being nobility, though it had slipped from her mind that Megaera was not truly her mother. Her real mother was a murderous wretch whose body was rotting somewhere under the glare of the sun, at the mercy of the elements and the scavengers picking at her carcass. Megaera had shown her nothing but love and support and that had fixed her permanently in the dark young filly's heart as mother.

The oasis loomed ahead and Mordecai's pace moved from a slow walk to a trot before slipping nearly effortlessly into a canter. Gwaihir squawked again, his talons pinching at her skin as he tried to stay on her back. "Nakho!" She shouted at him. She kicked her heels up and bucked in an attempt to throw the bird off of her back. The girl had had enough of his pinching every time she wandered. If he didn't want to go with her then he should just stay with Meg.

Mordecai snorted and glared at the bird as he flew and began to circle around. He came toward her like he was going to land and the girl bared her baby teeth at him. "No." She said firmly. "You hurt! You fly now, no riding." She was not a cushion for Gwaihir to just ride on and pinch at his own convenience. He might do it to Meg, but Mordecai certainly didn't have as much patience as her mother did. She glared at the bird again then moved toward the lake to drink.
