"I'm coming!"

Mordecai trembled as she waited for her rescuer to find her. Even though the voice sounded nothing like her father's she hoped that it was him. She wanted to snuggle into his feathers and pretened like she didn't get lost. Maybe she could even sucker him into telling her mother that she'd left with him and they'd been adventuring together. Mother didn't need to know that she'd gotten lost in a cave after she'd snuck out of the Throat. The longer she had to wait for whoever had called out to her to find her the more she suspected it wasn't her father. Einarr would have recognized his daughter's voice and torn the whole cave apart in his search for her, that she was confident of.

Her head lifted and she looked at the stallion that had found her, who very obviously wasn't who she wanted. The disappointment showed on her face and she did nothing to try and hide it. "Hey..." She repeated the stallion. "Where dad?" She asked. "Want dad now." Sure, she could have said 'thank you' to Mesec for rescuing her, but it didn't even cross her mind. All she wanted was her daddy.

"Was that you calling out? Are you hurt?"

"Yes." She answered his first question, deciding that she should stick to the common tongue that everyone was so familiar with. "No. Not hurt. Lost." She explained. "Want dad. Want to go home." Her head tilted and she peered behind her rescuer to the path that he had come on. "Am Mordecai." her dark eyes moved back to Mesec as she introduced herself. "Who you? Why you here?"

the emptiness that we confess in the dimmest hour of day
in Automatown they make a sound like the low sad moan of prey
