Sun, it rises, illuminating the blanket of frost that lay thick all about the three of you. It crunches underneath your feet, your weight sinking here and there where it has piled higher. It stings the warmth of your nostrils as you breathe in the sharpness of it, coldness resonating in the deepness of your lungs. Its fingers pull at your lily-white hair, the darkness of your skin. It is bigger than you thought it would be, reaching as far as you could see, and somehow wilder than you could have imagined. Mismatched eyes wander to the distance, glancing over the mountains, the tips of their spines reaching the sky beginning to burst with color; to the distinctive arches huddled across the tundra, the glimpse of deep blue that it offers you. She stops and sighs, begins slowly and you follow without question, silently promising yourself a trip to the water’s edge some other time.

Don’t be afraid of these-’ your eyes flit to the massive silver things-they are sentinels made by Ulrik.’ Despite her reassurances you crowd closer to the white mare, watching almost nervously as the two of you pass their bulk. ‘They are tasked with keeping out imposters and helping in the defense of our home.’ You open your mouth to speak, but she continues, distracting you from your questions. She was unknowingly good at that. You smile despite yourself, listening as she speaks of things that you couldn’t know, as if there should be no question about them. And so you don’t question them, but you make another promise to yourself to eventually ask. As she stops again you pull up beside her, following her gaze to the valley below, nestled within the shadows of the mountains.

Her smile passes on to you, and a bubbling excitement rises within you. Your spine tingles, though you cannot say whether it is from the cold ( which you had hardly noticed at all, you had been entirely too awestruck ) or the expanse tucked beneath you. ‘Welcome to Aurora Basin.“Thank you, Arah.” It is the only thing you can imagine to say, though a sheepishness warms the flesh of your cheeks. She calls out again and you shrink somewhat, inching just a step closer to the comparative comfort of her side, your heartbeat thrumming just a little bit louder, stronger.

Sometime within your relatively short journey you had decided that you liked her. The way she spoke, laughed, little things that you had linked ( wrongly or not, it didn’t matter ) to an infallible kindness within her. Maybe it was that she had welcomed you without question, seemingly matched your own quiet sort of way. Glancing at her, you try desperately within the moments that follow to gather whatever was left of the bravery you never really possessed, but in your heart of hearts you are afraid. Afraid of what, you do not know.
