This day he dreaded most. The slow winter dawn found the golden son awake, and tense. He looks through the thick brambles of the hollow where he had tried to sleep at the filtered light of morn. It was a reminder of what was to come this day and made him groan and lay back his head. The golden hadn’t hated the thought of this task his whole trip to it. In fact he had looked forward to it until he ran into a most curious bird at the Caves. Ranjiri. She was supposed to be his test. A litmus test if you will, to see how his ploy would come out with those of greater importance. The only problem was, it had been a failure, a miserable failure.

Not only had she not come around, but she had left in hustle of shouts and even worse opinions. He hadn’t expected to be that successful but certainly he never thought it would make the situation worse. If he was to play the same game with the more important target, he realized he might actually have something to worry about.

His crowned head falls back to the leafy floor, and the sigh blows up dust away. All the leaves which had laid there had been blown up in a pile beyond long ago in the night filled with sighs. Haldir rested on the other side of the thicket, but he had learned in that long night to move away from the golden’s head to avoid the leaf blower breaths. That deer at least still slept peacefully. The golden’s earth eyes watched him drowsily. Did he almost envy the deer for how it could sleep so peacefully? How it could avoid the worries of the world? Perhaps, for a split second he did.

It would be unwise though to categorize his worries and strains as for the greater good. To be sure this endeavor, if successful, would greatly ease any tensions his herd might have with others, but the golden was not a ‘greater good’ fellow. He was proud, vain, and greedy. All those ills compounding now as took a few last breaths in this quiet. His pride rested on the assurance that no matter the situation his gilded tongue could always find a slivering trail out. It could wrap and corrupt, it could change plans and fates as easy as another creature breaths. He had a philosophy on it. A life built on it. (A few memory hiding walls on it). Yet, the fly of the Ranjiri shook that foundation. In particular when it needed to be strongest for this day, he found when he reached for the assurance that let him sleep at night, it had not been there. For the first time, he was worried his skills might not be enough.

Rising up the golden shook the leaves that still clung to him. Haldir looked up with lazy eyes, his dreams still playing in their pale gaze. The gold doesn’t bother with the deer, his mind far too strained with his own troubles. Slowly he makes his way out of the thicket. Realizing he was being left the poor deer jerks up, shaking off the rest of his sleep, and trots after.

The golden pulls at his cloak, feeling winter’s chilly morning greeting. He wished for his wolf hide, a much warmer comfort and a reminder of his power, but that was far away. He looks to the beach cliffs not far away and mind starts racing once more about plans. Did he have any? Well if he did the other day had shaken them up so much as to render them looking so little and useless. Was he here to tell the truth? To lie? Honestly he himself was not sure anymore. His usual paths did not involve this task. He knew he would lie. He knew he would twist the truth. He knew he would kick up his heels and have a grand time with it. (Or at least that’s how they started). This though was –mending- things. Fixing them. And it was so foreign of an attempt now that he felt that lies could not do it alone, that he felt out of place.

Coming to the tree line the golden pauses. He needed to make up his mind, resolve himself. Certainly coming there with a confused face was no way to go, and above all he was determined not to show this weakness. Haldir jogs up beside the golden and looks out over the sea. His small tail wags to see such a strange change. How little had he been when he traveled over the land bridge? He barely remembered it, but even if he did not, the sight was exciting enough. Rolling waves crashed up, and sprayed col mists about in the early morning light. The sun was gone now though, slipping behind the gloomy clouds of winter. The golden’s missed its warm touch. He looked to where it should be, and then back to the island ahead. With a final sight he steps forward, ready.

It was like going into battle, though he did not arm himself with metal or blade. Instead he had more dangerous weapons, his body and words. One weapon was new, one he was unsure how to test out. The magic afforded this new rank contained something new. A lie he could tell as unbreakable. It sounded untrustworthy, so the golden had yet to use it, though certainly now he carried that weapon close. As he stepped out his face took on a slightly more pleasant glance, certainly not a smile, but not the disconcerting frown it had held in the shadows. His body moved with its usual grace, easy and free flowing, even though in the trees it had been dragging, and slow. Lifting his crowned head he stops to gaze upon the markers of the land bridge, then to the island. Waiting. If Gaucho had patrols as far as the Heart Caves, surely his presence as the very door step would not be missed. Ready to face Gaucho.
