The wind would not die down, not for this excursion to read the stars - not for any mortal creature or any of their plans. It continued to batter and to bellow, ripping through the mountains of the Basin in its nighttime fury. Luckily, no more than a few stray flakes picked up from mountainsides were cast about. Even farther to the north than this wintery land inhabited by unicorns, there were clouds gathering - a great blizzard for the day ahead was massing together and reading to speed south with the winds.

For now, though, the stars above where the male emerged from his shelter were bright and clear - if a cloud marred the sky it was only a fleeting, dark shadow. The stars had no more care for the wind than the wind had for the inhabitants of the lands that it moved through, so it remained ever-calm when viewed from the earth.

The truth about what was really going on beyond the sky was, of course, anything but calm. It raged with more passion than the wind that continued to cut with cold edges against the bodies of any that were exposed. All of that would remain, for now, a mystery to those that stood below.

Except in lucky moments. A fragment of that distant chaos cut through the calm of the night sky. It was small shooting star, arced with a small trail of white light across the lower horizon to the south. It disappeared within a moment, last seen in the midst of a 10-star constellation.
