Frostfall in the desert was a trying time. The days were mild compared to the rest of Helovia, but the nights were bitter with little shelter to be found from the wind and blowing sands. Each morning Megaera said a prayer of thanks to the Sun rose to warm them and hoped that Birdsong would come soon. It seemed as though the cold season would last forever. Sun rose and set but each day seemed shorter that it should and they all blurred together and it became hard to gauge the passing of time. Meg found herself unable to count the days and though she clearly remember the events of Orangemoon, yesterday was a blur. Not one to spend her time philosophizing, she chalked it up the the busy life of a leader and the strains of the season and went on with her duties.

She cruised the southern reaches of her home today, moving over the sands on foot with wings stretched wide to soak of the blessed rays of the afternoon sun. Not far off, whitecaps could be seen crashing on the shore the shore, advancing and then retreating back into the blue sea. For the moment at least, that seemed to greatest source of activity. Most of her family seemed to be sticking to thesis today so she guessed there would be little to see here. A quick sweep, she thought and then she’d take some time by the Diviner’s Fire for prayer. Meg still had yet to have a proper conversation with the tiny-winged Oracle and it seemed long overdue. There were too many in the herd that she knew too little and the bold Sultana meant to set that to rights.

With Gwaihir keeping an eye on Mordecai, Megaera was alone with her thoughts this afternoon. For someone who had always been better formed for action than brooding, it was an odd state to find herself in but one that seemed to come upon her more often since her promotion. Megaera had always been focused on improving herself, but now that drive has fueled by the hope her strength would benefit others rather than a self-involved competitiveness. She was determined to be a good leader, one who knew her people, helped them, protected them. She had seen what could become of a herd ruled by a tyrant. Her father had kept the obedience of his herd by fear, lorded over them with cruelty and a violence backed up by his band of sons that ran rampant through the tundra. It had ended in ruin; a cautionary tale and a prime example of the danger in letting greed and vanity rule. The Sunspear would never let that happen here.
