Megaera’s brow raised in surprise as the boy shied away from her. His reaction to her was such a far cry from what she had expected, for a moment the could just stare down at him with a quizzical frown. The words he snapped at her were like an angry little whip and having never dealt with boys quite his age before she wondered if this might be then next phase of rebelious, male adolescence.

That can’t be it… she thought. It was to great a change from the bright exuberance she had seen before, to this sullen, angry boy. Whenever she’d joked with colts before, little passes had always given then such a boost, ‘Hertz the Hero’, ‘Zèklè the Master Builder’. their little chests had puffed out with pride and they’d happily chatted with her about whatever had been on their minds. If anything, his attitude reminded her a little of her own willful daughter… is this just how all teenagers are?

”Fine.” he said, far to many times for her take it seriously if his tone wouldn’t already have clued her in. Megaera let her skepticism show clearly on her face, but let him finish his little rant and good thing she did for his comment about Gaucho was another clue. Her counterpart had many demands on his time and it seemed that for some reason this boy had reason to believe that he should have been carved out a piece of Gaucho’s attention and hadn’t gotten it. She’d seen Gaucho and Ampere fight a time or two….could those have possibly been lovers quarrels? The boy had to have gotten the earthy part of his coloring from somewhere. Whatever the truth of that matter, it seemed a change in subject was in order.

She tried a tactic she’d used on Mordecai a time or two, when jokes and understanding didn’t work, a firm hand could sometimes distract enough to sooth. She  adopted a very no-nonsense voice and a stern expression. “Gaucho-Smaucho. The Wildfire has nothing to do with this, but I would certainly know why you feel like lying to your Sultana would be a good idea. There’s something the matter and if something is wrong in the Throat I had better be told what it is.”

A sound had her eyes turning and, of course, it was Gaucho that approach the pair. For the first time her heart sunk to see her mentor approach. Whatever was on the boy’s mind, she certainly wasn’t going to get it out of him with [his father?] here to distract him. The mare tried to give a subtle shake of her head to warn Gaucho away from the grope but it seemed she was too late for that.
