Despite Birdsong being upon them, the Basin sheltered some Frostfall still. Surprisingly to her, snow and ice still persisted despite the changing of seasons. Instead of melting away and becoming stained brown with mud and melt, many drifts of snow and patches of ice remained, pristine and white as the day they accumulated. As the day was ending, the air cooled, and the sun washed warm shades over the land and its inhabitants.

Fire was set to the midnight mare’s coat. Golds embellished her deep blue shades, and stained her stark white mane. She sighed, enjoying the last warm kisses of the day, happy she was home. She cast a long shadow as she delicately picked her way across the permafrost. Large patches of mud stained the frozen earth, which she maintained a wide distance from. She wasn’t a dainty creature, but didn’t particularly enjoy being covered with mud and slop, either. Especially since she had returned to her former glory, she was a bit more particular about her appearance. She had filled out beautifully compared to the starved creature that had arrived in Helovia many moons ago, and her coat was more sleek and healthy than she ever remembered.

So she went, golden and glowing and all shades of blue, down the trail. One thing she enjoyed about the Aurora Basin was the solitude. The mountains that protected them provided shelter and safety without needing the horned creatures to mingle closely. She often wandered by herself, making large loops around the land to stretch her legs and strengthen her endurance. But she still appreciated the fellowship she found in those who comprised her herd.

She came to a stop atop a large flat rock, and scanned the landscape that spilled before her. Stormy eyes, sharp and steely, took in the view. Several hawks slowly circled a ways off in the sky. She could hear the chatter of rodents finding shelter at the end of the day in their caves and nooks. A light wind tousled her white waves, and carried to her scents of the world around her. Her head high, neck arched slightly, body held proud, the fae was statuesque upon her platform. It wasn’t until something in the distance caught her attention that she finally moved. Swinging her head, she looked intently at a beast approaching her, but it didn’t appear as though it had seen her yet. She didn’t immediately engage the creature, as she was sure any danger would never have made its way this far into the Basin without already being intercepted. Another smaller figure trailed the larger – perhaps a child? – fighting their way through the remainder of heaping snow drifts still not melted by the Birdsong sun. As they grew closer, she noticed a horn upon the brow of the larger creature, so it was a unicorn. It was difficult to assume the color of the unicorn due to the glowing sun, so he still remained a stranger. She tried to get a visual of the small creature that followed the unicorn. It wasn’t until they were much closer that she noticed it was not a unicorn foal, but a fawn. And the unicorn was marred with large splashes of white.

In an instant she realized who the pair were and leapt from the rock, taking off at a gallop. A warmth grew in her breast as excitement coursed through her. “Ashamin!” She called out, her voice carrying easily through the open air. She had missed the painted buck dearly during her journey. The Haruspex was wise, and warm, and a comforting sight for the warrior girl. And small Lochan picked his way through the snow and slush. She had met the small cerndyr shortly after its birth. He had grown quite a bit since her last time seeing him, though he was still lacking the impressive rack he was sure to grow.

She was finally upon them, a warm laugh wafting from her velvet lips. She reached out, leaning in to press the side of her face against the long neck of the stallion. “Oh, Ashamin, how wonderful it is to see you!”She stepped back, her grey eyes now warm and friendly. Turning slightly, she dropped her head down to the level of the small fawn, wondering if he would boldy advance or shyly retreat.“And hello to you too. My, have you grown.”
She turned once more to Ashamin, smiling warmly, glad to finally see him.
