let it break upon you
like a wave upon the sand

"Momma, it's so hot." Rang a frail, vernal voice into the humid atmosphere.

Cassiopeia felt a pang of guilt well up in her gut, as if she was to blame that the summer heat was growing more brutal by the day. A grimace was wrought upon her delicate features as she peered down at the youthful filly whose head was nestled upon her bosom. She lowered her muzzle to her petite head, nuzzling her slender ears in an affectionate, consolatory manner.

"I know, sweetheart. Not much longer 'til we reach the beach." Gently, she nudged the spindly filly's haunches forward, exhorting her to carry on. Not even the shade provided by the trees in the Endless Blue's surrounding forest could supply much relief from the blistering climate. Hesitantly, the roan filly proceeded onward.

Cassiopeia moved slowly, but with purpose. The beach was the first place she could think of when pondering somewhere to find solace from the opulent sun. This would be the first time she had ventured to this location since the day Cirrus was brought into the world. Her cyan gaze never left her diminutive frame. The cobalt mare walked no father than a stride behind her, prodding her softly every once and a while. She could smell the saline fragrance of the frothy waves when she inhaled and soon her ears pricked forward at the vague auditory sensation of the boisterous tide. "We're getting close now, Cirrus." She informed her.

With high steps Cirrus moved through the forestry, small wings held at half mast just above her brusque back to allow air to circulate under them. They were hot when held furled atop her back. A sigh came rushing from her maw in response to her mother's lyrics. She wished that her wings were strong enough to fly for long distances. It would make this whole journey all the more easy. For now she could mostly just glide. It would take time and practice before she had perfected flight.

Soon the sapphire waters became visible through the gaps of the trees. A few more steps, and the palisade of lumber divided and yielded to a vast expanse of golden sand and unending azure skies overlooking endless blue waters. "There it is: the Endless Blue." She closed her blue-green eyes, hoisting her head slightly higher into the air as she inspired a distinct piquant aroma. "Finally!" Exclaimed the eager young belle as she reared and pawed at the azure sky with her petite hooves, lanky limbs folding and bending before she leapt into the air with wings outstretched to their full extent. Although still exceptionally small, they showed the potential to one day match the magnitude of her parents' in bigness.

A quiescent giggle erupted within Cassiopeia's svelte bodice. She missed the careless abandon of foal hood. She watched as Cirrus galloped toward the ocean, her roan hide flecked with a single wispy cloud as it existed in the sky.

She then decided to join her, leisurely making her way to the shore as the filly frolicked in the shallow depths. What a relief the cool water was.
