Ashamin waited because he was always waiting. He had nothing on his mind except, well, everything, and he wished very much to cease talking with all others about the matter. But he knew better than most that it was no good to deal with things on one's own, and he knew too that this was his job, now. Somehow and antisocial misanthropic sort had become the one that was supposed to talk to and meet with the entire herd for some reason or another.
He loved his role, he really did. But it was beginning to take a toll.
Tonight, at least, he knew the gathering would be intimate. Only the Basin's leads and Emissary would be present--if they were lucky, maybe a God would be too. He still had filed away his Lords' and lady's requests from the previous season. Should the God of the spark appear, he knew what he would need to ask.
But now that he had seen the God in all his glory, he felt even more insecure. He had watched the God greet so many others and pass over his kneeling haruspex. Though Ashamin was not hungry for the spotlight by any means, he had begun to fear he was forgotten.
Then again, could you really been forgotten if you had never been known? Perhaps the lightning at the meeting had been a divine accident, a mass misinterpretation. Perhaps he should never have gone.
But it was too late now, and as he stood in the chilled and unlit cave, Lochan standing quietly at his side, he could do nothing but wait for his company.
Everything was waiting.
