Only the dead have seen the end of war.
She pressed her head into his chest and he felt the dreaded slime on his skin. She was infected. As she stepped away, shaking her head, he took in the gashes and wounds on her face. A breath hissed from between his teeth, “I would be wasting my breath if I told you to stay away from these battles, wouldn’t I?” His question was equal parts exasperation and amused irritation.
He sighs, eyes still narrowed against the glare, “I think I’m more ‘fine,’ than you,” he glances pointedly at the swollen bridge of her nose, “But yes, my head does ache.” His grumbling voice rattles in his head, despite the quietness with which he spoke. He closes his eyes briefly, seeking relief from the unbearable glare, “Do you feel anything else besides the cough?” He continues on a whisper, head sinking lower as pain pounded with each strong stroke of his heart.
He had encounter some afflicted with the black lung who seemed to only cough. Others had appeared greatly debilitated by the disease. He snorts (but immediately regrets it as it brings a sharp pang to his skull), “If you had just joined me at the Edge, Rexanna, you could have avoided one of these sicknesses.” He knows his voice is nearly goading, but the pain in his head makes him short and careless with his words.
He reopens one eye to watch his gilded princess. “I hope your beloved Basin has competent healers?” His question is pointed and terse, but he cannot help the concern that lingers beneath his words.
