Only the dead have seen the end of war.
It was late morning, the sun burning nearly all of the mist off of the Edge. The two giants and the large foal had slept through the morning coolness, and only the warmth of the day was left. Well, at least Whisper and Astra has slept through the morning. He had woken with dawn, laying behind the exhausted mother. He had kept watch through most of the night, so the early light had broken through his light slumber with ease.
But he hadn’t had the heart to rouse the peacefully dozing dam and foal. The birth had been difficult for Whisper, Brisa had told him of it. And being born was certainly an exhausting event. So the elephant had let them sleep, quietly resting behind them, awaiting their awakening. He had felt a pang of guilt as he had waited, thinking of Rexanna. Although, surely, his spending the night with a mare and foal would not irk her? He could never be certain with that woman.
They had taken a leisurely pace to the Edge, for it wasn't much further from the Thistle Meadow. Just through some trees, up to the plateau, and there they were. At the remnants of the glass wall. Though— thankfully— he had managed to clean up the majority of the broken glass with the help of Anzanie and Alysanne. So only small scraps glittering beneath the earth were left— and only concentrated in certain areas.
He wasn’t sure if all the shards would ever be entire cleared. Most likely not.
With Astra in mind, he was careful to choose and area that he knew was cleared of all but large slabs of remaining wall. He nodded towards them with his great horn “We’ll be adding glass spikes, to protect our borders, in the near future,” he offered as an explanation for the irregular shapes of glass wall remaining. “It was shattered, but most of the broken pieces are gone now. Mind your step— especially you, little Astra,” he dropped his head, nudging the little foal playfully, before turning and walking forward.
“Welcome to the Edge,” his deep voice rolled over the green earth, rumbling with contented happiness.
