When he had woken up that morning, covered in dew, a bitter taste lacing his mouth, he had had low expectations of the day. Truth be told, he had never thought he would find another soul— for his banishment had practically been a death sentence— it was a punishment handed out by those who had been too cowardly to swing the executioner's axe. And he had felt cheated from death ever since they had cast him away, as if they knew he would never survive alone. Each day he was haunted with the knowledge that he should have died and each day he knew it could very well be his last. Every step forward was one closer to his grave.

Finding the Little Bird had been a blessing— a second chance— as if the world had been renewed and his crimes overlooked. Ironically unbeknownst to him, she wished to be seen as a more mature mare. Rowtag on the other hand, wanted to be a child. He yearned to gallop with long gangly legs away from his troubles and know nothing of the real world and the harsh reality of life. If he knew she wished to grow up he would have told her to treasure her youth, to enjoy it whilst it lasts. He wished he had never grown up.

Because all too soon he felt as though he was forced into adulthood. When you were a child you could make mistakes and they could be forgiven. But adulthood was a different game. You paid the price for your actions, whatever the cost. No amount of wishful thinking could ever bring him back his youth. He could pretend— but he could never turn back time.

So the young copper stallion enjoys his time with the filly, he laughs with her and agrees to the challenge. And he gallops along behind her through the woodlands, head thrown back, mane and tail whipping behind him in the wind. His hooves kick up mud and dirt and by the time they’ve stopped running his white fetlocks are coated in a thick layer of brown soil.

His chest heaves and his sides hurt because all he wants to do is laugh. He wants to ask why they’ve slowed, the temptation to throw a teasing remark gradually builds within him. Have you grown tired Little Bird? Is running not your forte? She tells him to be careful and he stops, mid step, hoof hanging in the air before he carefully dodges the shattered fragments.  “A wall?” His curiosity gets the better of him, “Why would you need a wall?” By the looks of the glass debris the wall must have once been a sight to behold. Shame, he thought, he would have liked to have seen it in it’s heyday.

When he next lifts his head she’s motioning with her wings to the area surrounding them. The World’s Edge. He steps past her, far too excited to hold himself back, a small smile playing upon his lips. He wants to make sure he soaks in everything, each silhouette of every tree, the way the mist seems to haunt the forest, the cushioning feeling of soft grass beneath his hooves. He wants to remember what it feels like to discover what could very well be his new home, so he savors the memory and prays he will not soon forget it. He’s much too busy surveying the filly’s home to say much at all before he realizes he has practically barged into someone else’s homeland. He pauses and turns to look upon her face, “Big nest for such a Little Bird.” He chuckles to himself, inhaling deeply, yes— yes he could see himself living here. “If I were to say, you know, wish to take up residency here; how exactly would I go about doing such a thing?

i'm headed straight for the castle
