» Perhaps she had been too hasty in her decision-making, not an uncommon problem for a naturally impulsive and flighty girl like Odette. At the time, the prospect of laying eyes for the first time upon ocean waves and salt spray foaming on beaches, up close and personal, had been too enticing to pass up. What she had failed to consider was the distance between the threshold where she had been found by Jahzara and the others and this new foreign land they called the World’s Edge. Odd, because the name itself was clearly a dead giveaway for a remote and faraway location. Odette simply hadn’t registered this distance as a problem before she chose to follow Jahzara, because ordinarily, if she’d had full command of her wings and her god-given gifts of flight, this would not have been any obstacle to bat an eyelash at. Even now, the sheer size and strength of the single lone wing remaining to her spoke of the massive wingspan she had once boasted of, its long streamlined shape clearly built for long periods of soaring on fierce wind currents. So accustomed was she to flying practically everywhere, she had forgotten to even think about the fact that she was now forced to walk the entire distance like the earthbound ones. For an equine in their prime of health, who had spent their lifetime traversing terrain and building up the strength and endurance of their legs, the trip from the Threshold to the World’s Edge would have been a relatively easy one. But for a rather ill pegasus mare hailing from a clan that regarded themselves as angels, whose bones had become gradually lighter like a bird’s over the course of generations and whose flight muscles were perhaps more developed even than their walking ones, this journey was a serious undertaking.

» It most certainly didn’t help that the ground gradually inclined upwards as they approached the northern coastal regions, the slope almost unnoticeable at first but gradually worsening as Odette tired. It was quite embarrassing to lose her breath so easily and lag behind Jahzara so consistently the entire trip over, but she had been tired before even setting out, and her lack of balance slowed the pace even more to just slightly faster than 'sluggish'. Odette was certain that her golden appaloosa guide, the kind lady who had so selflessly offered her own home to the half-dead stranger on the ground, would not have minded waiting an extra day or two for her to recover her strength, but Odette herself was far too starved for a herd’s safety and companionship to entertain the idea of putting off the journey. Though the pace was slow, at least every passing moment brought her just one step closer to her destination, and the hope of having something to look forward to rejuvenated her more than any amount of fitful slumber.

» Except, of course, when she had to halt and catch her breath, putting aside any embarrassment for the sake of not killing herself with exertion. Sides expanding and contracting like a bellows against the jutting frame of her ribcage, the golden white mare shut her eyes and silently willed her own heartbeat to slow in its frantic thundering against her chest. When the roar of blood in her veins had finally subsided somewhat, she at last ventured to open her eyes again and take a closer look around, noting with some surprise that the landscape had changed more than she realized while her attention had been focused on putting one hoof before the other. Gone were the meadows of violet thistles she remembered traversing not long ago, and now the sun was slowly sinking behind a veil of coastal coniferous evergreens in preparation for dusk. When she took the time to inhale and taste the sweet air around her, the unmistakable tang of a salty ocean breeze sent a thrill through to her core. "How much farther shall we go from here?" she dared to ask of her guide, a childlike glimmer of excitement dancing in the liquid black eyes she turned on Jahzara. In reality, they were nearly upon the doorstep of the World’s Edge already, the glass wall hidden just behind the crest of the next hill - she simply did not yet dare to imagine the conclusion of what felt like a never-ending journey.
