Ohoho, no, she didn’t like it.
As soon as she saw the bloodstained waters, the girl shied, heart racing at the vast expanse of red. Were they sure this place was safe? Nasreen had been raised not to question authority, but now that the Throat had sent her to patrol not only the Caves but this place as well…she had her doubts. Though she wasn’t quite so squeamish as to flee, the ruby-red surface, slick and opaque and glistening, didn’t exactly encourage her to come any closer. Copper ears tilted backwards, she cast a distasteful glance at the water and began to move along the river. Hopefully, there would be nothing to see and she could get out of this place. It still struck her as strange that they had assigned her to the tasks of a foot soldier. She knew that she was no princess here, but the job did seem rather menial. Privately, she thought her talents would be much better spent elsewhere—crafting, perhaps, she mused wistfully. The glass magic had abandoned her long ago, but she could help in other ways. She still remembered how Dragomir had shown her how to make rope, and she was sure that she could assist the herd’s crafters in a similar fashion. Granted, there weren’t as many plants in the desert as there had been in the Edge, but she could always gather…her thoughts trailed off abruptly as she spotted two figures in the distance.
Suspecting that they might be patrolling as well, she headed in their direction. If she was really lucky, perhaps they would already be done, and they could all go home! “Hello,” Nasreen called as she drew near, “I beg your pardon, but do you happen to be patrolling for the Dragon’s Throat?”
