After the Earth God’s battle, the ocean mare hadn’t hurried off of the islands, as some others had. She had tarried for a short while, looking after the winged filly and attempting to gather herself together again (for the constant violence of battle is nothing but harrowing for a peaceable-hearted creature like herself). She feels better now, with her father’s gift hanging around her neck and pressing against her chest—as though his strength is with her.

With cloven hooves sweeping delicately from the earthen bridge and onto coastal sands, the ocean mare pauses for a short breath, long tresses dancing to curl up about her face as her movement halts. White eyes look out to her left, where the shores of her father are not powerful, frothing waves as usual, but a still and calm water, allowing the summer sky to be reflected perfectly across its glassy surface. Had she not known better, Tiamat would think that she could fly—release herself among the lower clouds and soft blue silk of her mother sky. She has always wondered what it would be like, to fly. How joyous it must be!

Pressing her lips together in a gentle, amiable line, the blue unicorn exhales a wistful sigh from her nostrils before she presses forward, crossing the pearly sands before stepping into the liquid mirror of Halcyon Flats. She has only been to this tranquil land once before, and—oh—how she remembers it well. The Sun God had brought these clear waters to them, promising His people nothing but peace, promising that there would be no violence, promising that there would be no bloodshed. And she had dared to believe Him. But—how terribly, regrettably wrong He had been. Evil had indeed come, a battle was fought, and blood had been spilled.

Surely, a God can make mistakes too?

Tiamat’s good heart can think of nothing but to forgive Him, to give Him the benefit of the doubt, no matter how bitter the betrayal had seethed through her. She believes that the Sun God had done all that He could for them, and harbored only the best of intentions in His actions (because that’s what a God is, isn’t it? A protector? A guardian? A leader?)

Brushing the length of her plumed tail across the water’s salty surface, she watches the ripples as they expand before slowly disappearing, pondering on such things in a peaceful silence. It is only then that she notices movement, a fair distance away, where the shallow waters gradually drop off to the ocean’s broad depth. Tiamat pricks her ears forward, dainty head lowering as she moves closer, trying to see, and trying to make out… “Oh my goodness,” the blue mare gasps, recognizing with horror what she thinks to be an equine at its bottom. “Hello!” She calls down to the stranger, despite it being useless. Spinning around, she cries to the empty shore, “HELP! Someone help!” Looking back to the drowning equine in a flurry of hair and shells, she braces herself, prepared to swim—if only to try.

She can’t not try.
