His hooves sunk slightly into the soft soil that gathered beneath the trees, his breathing slow and calm. According to the sweet child tucked securely beneath his wing, the small troupe were currently picking their way about the border of the World's Edge. The journey had been a pleasant one, the quartet of equines with their two companions moving over the terrain in an easy silence. Rift found that the borderlands surrounding the Edge were beautiful and surprisingly similar to the Amarinthine Passage in which he had stumbled upon Mitzi.
At the though of the pink and ebony painted mare, Rift's heart sunk; where was she? If she returned to the Veldt and found him gone, would she think he had abandoned her? Would she move on to another stallion? His head drooped at the thought. Taking a breath and blinking the mist from his eyes, the scarlet lad reminded himself that the only thing that mattered at this point was Mitzi's happiness and safety. If another could provide that for her, and as long as his beloved kestrel still smiles, he would live with gratitude in every breath.
As the troupe slowed to a stop, Rift waited quietly as a cool breeze toyed with his mane. Was there some sort of signal that Naerys would cast into the sky to draw out her family? A small seed of anxiety planted itself in the heart of the stallion as he realized how their small party may look to a member of the Edge. Would they think Naerys had been kidnapped by the foreigners? How would they react to a child of their herd snuggled up beneath a stranger's wing?
He shifted ever so slightly, though he did not pull away from Naerys; he had made the decision to get her home safely, and if that caused him to be pegged as a foreign scoundrel, so be it.
At least scoundrel sounded better than coward.
