Hesperos
Picking his way through the tall croppings of trees he familiarized himself with this new area; large cedars, oaks and pines soaring into the sky, broad canopy dappling the already overcast sunlight. The further he walked the more he could smell the salty spray of the sea. Drawing towards this scent the thickly growing trees became sparser until they finally revealed a sharp drop, plummeting towards the splashing of waves below. He toed up to the edge and looked down, eyed the craggy rocks jutting through the waves of seafoam.
Turning back from the edge he slowly wandered through the trees. Wholly unfamiliar, this terrain… His nose was clogged with the thick humidity, far different from the dry heat he was accustomed to. After running for weeks he finally had the chance to collect himself, assess his situation… and with a pang in his chest it set in what had happened. His whole herd murdered… a betrayal, he suspected, with the other herd lying in wait. He’d kept the plan secret with the other higher ranking in the herd, operating as a lieutenant. They hadn’t revealed their plan of assault until just before… in a group of five, who had betrayed him?
Not that it mattered now. He hadn’t looked over his shoulder to see what had become of the others. After seeing so many of his herd he knew the cause was lost. A warrior though he was, he knew better than to throw himself into a fruitless battle. So he ran.
It his him suddenly, like running into a wall. He stumbled in his walk and faltered, dropping his head, heaving a great sigh. The life he’d led ended. The people he knew, everyone he cared about, was gone. All he had was this collective of equines that he didn’t even know, didn’t even trust. He wanted to conquer but had no direction and none on his side; truly, he was alone.
