Gull!
underneath it all, we're just savages It was high tide, and Gull was in high spirits. Feeling boisterous, he had taken to the sky to blow off some steam, and he was having a grand old time at that. Just beneath the clouds he danced, shadow-boxing and showing off for no one in particular. Only a few migrating birds were privy to the spectacle that was unfolding above the Isles, and even they scattered with alarmed backwards glances as he plummeted from the sky, whooping and hollering all the way down. Pulling up from his umpteenth dangerous dive, Gull let loose a whinny of satisfaction and flapped up into the wild blue yonder once more. While he had always been remarkably adept at entertaining himself (whether from an innate capacity for finding joy in the simple things or from a lack of friends, I won’t comment), he was beginning to grow bored with this game and found himself desiring an audience. And who better, Gull thought, gliding beyond the beach below and over the jungle, than Firebug? He knew that svelte little body had been traipsing around the island somewhere—she just couldn’t stay away, could she? The stag chuckled to himself, remembering the afternoon that they had spent together. He really couldn’t blame her, he supposed: he’d come back for seconds, too. With a raucous crow, Gull swooped low over the trees, now searching in earnest for Parelia. As he balanced on outstretched wings, his blue eyes scanned the landscape below, looking for the familiar cream-colored form amongst the tropical foliage. “Firebug!” he called down, hoping his voice would carry, “Come out, come out wherever you are!” With any luck, she would be nearby—after this bout of hide-and-go-seek, there were other games he’d rather like to play.
