“Mama!” The small voice broke the morning stillness, and the deer in the meadow raised their heads cautiously. For a moment, all was silent again, as if the speaker was taking a breath, then suddenly: MAAAAAA-MMAAAAA!! it hollered. Startled, a flock of birds rose into the air and the worried deer bounded into the trees. Behind them shot a golden blur, whose excited barking was only drowned out by Areli’s yelling. “BEE!” she screamed after the pup, “LEAVE’M’ALONE!” The girl stomped a hoof before trotting in the direction that the wolf had run, the expression on her face clearly exasperated. How were they supposed to find Mama if Bee insisted on running down every woodland animal they came across? Thinking of the hundreds of deer that lay between the pair and home, she groaned aloud. BEE! Areli called again, rolling her eyes as she watched the tall thistles waving wildly at the far corner of the meadow. No response. Frowning, the filly drew herself up to her full height, and bellowed out her best Parelia impression: “If you don’t listen RIGHT NOW, young lady…”

Into her mind flashed the sudden image of a rabbit, and Areli jumped, too surprised to finish the thought. It wasn’t the first time it had happened—though that in itself had been rather jarring, when her companion had chosen to telepathically communicate the bloody carcass that was her dinner—but she still was unused to the push of Bee’s growing consciousness on her own. At first, she had only been able to sense the pup’s strongest emotions, which had been easy enough to ignore when she had wanted to. But gradually, the wolf’s psyche had grown in complexity, and now the glimpses of the world through Bee’s eyes had begun. With every passing day, the pair’s lives became further intertwined. To be sure, it was a beautiful thing, their journey together, and perhaps Areli would realize that in retrospect. But for now, the child was used to being the center of everyone’s world—including her own—and sharing was something that she found difficult to learn. “Bee,” she sighed, quietly this time, “C’mon. We’ve still gotta fin’ Mama.”
