The Sunspear

The northern stretches of Helovia were never Megaera’s favorite place to be; whenever she was away from the Dragon’s Throat, it was as if she had left her heart back in the southern sands. As it was all that her heart loved was there: her children, her lover, her herd… she even loved the blistering sun and the harsh climate and each hour that passed was one sooner until she was back where she belonged. It was necessary, however, for her to travel out from her home on occasion (for diplomatic and practical purposes) and though she left her heart behind it was made easier that the other half of her soul accompanied her on these journeys. Gwaihir, now a fully fledged adult in glistening gold and rich brown feathers, was a magnificent being, and her closest friend. Though he was of a grumpy disposition and they often disagreed, the companionship and understanding that existed between them was more than enough to keep the Sunspear in good spirits.

On their way south again, the bay battlemare cut through the forested pass of the Threshold on foot with the eagle swooping lazily through the trees ahead of her. More often than not, the region housed the newcomers to halva and perhaps they would find someone in need, (or someone it would benefit the Throat to recruit). It was Gwaihir that heard the voices, one low and raspy, the other bright and chipper, and followed the sounds to where the butterfly-winged and antlered mares converged. Not bothering to keep quiet of concealed her perched on a high branch above them and watched carefully out of a baleful golden gaze. “Two mares. Both strangers.” he spoke silently into Megaera’s mind and she altered her course to follow. Reaching them, she paused for a moment, on the edge of vision to study the two. The wings of the younger one were certainly and odd sight, but she was rather more interested in the macabre trinkets the darker one carried. Meg had one carried bones on her mane and they had been reminders of death and her own hatred, and by the Sun’s grace she had destroyed them along with the darkest chapter of her life. What does this mare carry with her?

With a whicker to announce her presence she moved forward from the shadows. “Good day to you both, I hope I am not disturbing you.” She gestured upward with her muzzle to where the eagle perched and continued with a wry smile “Gwaihir and I are always eager to meet new faces. I am Megaera, of the Dragon’s Throat.” The eagle clicked his beak in protest, he never liked anyone save his Meg and her little ones.
