The birds knew what was happening below.
In frenetic circles they lingered above part of the coastline, screeching and screaming with impatient calls and wails. Soon there would be food for them to eat - they could hear the cries coming from beneath the waves, inside of the eggs. Soon, they would be fed. Soon, they would no longer be hungry.
Beneath the waves however, something else wanted those eggs. Long limbs slipped from the surface of the waters, trying to grab towards where there or four of them were nestled tightly behind a ring of stones. Water poured in and out of the rocky circle, but it wasn't enough to get the eggs passed the stony barrier. And, from where the creature was on the bottom of the sea-bed, its arms were not long enough to grab the eggs out. It would have to surface and risk exposure, or perhaps find a way to increase the strength of the waves so that the pull would be enough to raise the eggs above the height of the rocks.
