“We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows. Choose a place where you won't do harm - yes, choose a place where you won't do very much harm, and stand in it for all you are worth, facing the sunshine.” -- E.M. Forster

It was a long flight from the Threshold back to the Throat, and an even longer walk. Meg would choose the aerial route over the terrestrial every time if given the option but she didn’t begrudge the necessity of staying afoot given her new accompaniment. (Well, maybe she might have a bit, but the curiosity the antlered mare sparked far outweighed it.) The Eagle had Gone on a head when the left the threshold, and would reach the Throat before them with orders to hurry back and fetch her with all haste if anything was amiss. Meg watched Tuppence carefully thought their journey, taking note any other habits that, like Tuppence’s greeting ritual, betrayed her as a foreigner. The way she spoke was strange too, a slow, gravely drawl that seemed to lure you in and yet had turned so unexpectedly sharp with grief in that instant at the threshold.

As they moved through the Deep Woods, the Flats, and finally into the grassy lands of the Heart, Meg took care to explain each land and it’s features. In that times between she sketched a rough outline in words of the layout of Helovia: what lay in each direction, the placement of the four herds… There was so much that the would have rather asked the mare though, and it was a test to keep up the guise of polite interest. I have worn bones before…What do yours mean?

They were nearing the beach now, and Meg almost purred with happiness when they crested the last dune that brought them in sight of the sea. Beyond the water lay her home, and her family; she always missed her children and her husband so dreadfully when she was away. She paused on the sandy ridge, and looked back to find the antlered mare. “Well, there it is. Our God of Sun provides the crossing. I’ll have to ferry you across this time, if you aren't afraid of heights.” She stretched out her left wing, spreading the fathers to reveal a glint of the golden key that was tucked securely there. “The crafter’s will provide you with a key soon enough, and you’ll be able to come and go as you wish.” She paused, unsure how to bring up what had seemed to be a touchy subject. “If, ah… If there is anything the herd can do to help you on your mission, I hope you’ll let us know. We have quite a few resources that might aid you.”
