Her brief glance about had yielded no others— but she was unused to scanning dunes. Her sight was better acclimated to scanning reefs and undersea valleys, and so the dark bay mare mare had escaped Aquila’s vision. So wholly had her attention been on carving off the opalescent skin and consuming the succulent flesh, that the shadow of raised winged and flared feathers moving on the sand so close to her caught her off-guard.

But her guard quickly flared up, in the form of flashing aqua stripes, raised ridges, and flared fins. Her gills and nostrils still sucked for oxygen, but slowly her barrel was calming its rapid movement for air— though exhaustion still sagged her usually athletic frame.

A growl issued from her throat, she was too tired to defend herself from a winged predator— even if this dark bay mare was smaller than herself. Unblinking, aqua eyes rake over the lithe body of the pegasus woman, severe stare lingering on her wings. It was rare that the seahorse was allowed to study them so closely while they were unfurled— usually she was fighting or disappearing beneath the waves. So, she took advantage, studying their structure for weakness, points the would yield beneath her teeth or arteries that would slice beneath her horn.

Eyes jerked to the woman’s lowered, aggressive face as she spoke. The Akvian’s own head dropped, mirroring the pegasus’s, to hover above her prey. Fins fanned, tail barbs rattled, teeth bared, ridges rose— her body seemed to say, This is mine, of the gleaming, bloody carcass at her webbed hooves.

A snort pushed past her flared nostrils, “Bridge?” Her growl was deep and disbelieving, “I need no bridge for water.” Her ridges undulated as she spoke, as if to highlight her words. She paused, eyes sweeping the threatening, winged body— part of her wished to defend her catch, another part wished to disappear beneath the waves. But she was too tired for either actions, so instead she asked, “Why is there a bridge to here?” Her body did not relax, but the growl left her voice.
