ULRIK the ENGINEER

Ulrik felt tense, muscular shoulders rolling beneath his dark hide. Long, tangled hair hung wildly around his arched neck and caught around his two, crooked horns. Cloven hooves carried him in a steady swing, pacing back and forth across the frosted earth in the grove. Every now and then, the curled lion's tail at his hocks would twitch and flash in irritation in time with an irked snort of white from flared nostrils. He was in rare form.

Even Kirchoff had managed to escape, off doing whatever it was beasts from hell did in their spare time. A wall stood in their mind with a gigantic sign on it reading "I'm away until you calm down". Ironically, that did nothing to help him calm the hammering of his heart as he longed for something. Tension. Action.

He wanted to feel needed again, powerful. Ulrik wanted to build a machine and wage war, feel the points of his horns plunge deep into waiting flesh, and instead, he was here. Instead, he was building glass for the Edge. He was attending herd meetings. He was mundane, boring and not at all himself. The reflection taunting him from the rippling waters was not the man he remembered, and to not know oneself was the greatest tragedy of all.

If he had to blame anything and anyone, it was fucking Midas. Goddamn, fucking Midas. The stupid beast had to go get struck by lightning on a clear day on his watch, and it had changed everything. He hated the dead horse for doing this, even though rationally he knew it was not the painted stallion's fault for dying. Still, the second he had taken over an unwanted babysitting job, there he was, public enemy.

And the worst part? Most had forgiven him! Were they blind? Stupid? Essetia had been the only one to hold a grudge, and he loved her for it. Love was not a word he threw around lightly. She had a spine, a temper and a brain in one odd, bare-headed package, and she challenged him, held him accountable.

He couldn't shaker her from his thoughts.
