& we'll love again, we'll laugh again, we'll cry again, and we'll dance again

The midnight girl slipped away from the Basin, seeking the cover of nightfall to aid in her solitude and thoughts. She was slow at first, as to not draw attention from any watching eyes, before casting her silver gaze over her shoulder. No one had followed, no one had noticed, and nobody cared. Her crowned head swung forward and she lept, long legs breaking into a gallop. Away she flew, casting a wake of newly fallen snow, allowing her legs to carry her as far as they could. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she allowed the sound of her beating blood and thudding hoof beats to fill her ears and mute the thoughts that screamed in her head.

She was painted like the night, blue cobalt stretched across sloping curves, with traces of stars spilling away from her spine. She was made of the midnight sky, pieced together with shards of starlight and bits of cosmic dust. She had traveled far in her short years, never knowing home until her arrival at the Aurora Basin. But despite all else, she felt at home beneath the sprawling galaxies and inky blue of the night sky. Deep within the night she blended in. She was no one. She wasn't a warrior, wasn't a daughter, wasn't a girl with a broken heart. She simply was.

Grey clouds began to encroach on her beautiful night, swollen with impending snow. There really was no escaping anything in this frozen scape. As the first few flakes began to fall, she imagined what it would be like not living in a place constantly covered in snow. Wind whistled by her, and several small flakes clung to her long lashes as she tried to blink away the tears that came with the frigid cold that stuck needles into her face. The blue girl pushed through the discomfort, willing her body to hold strong as she forced her way across the Steppe.

Running, running. Always running.

She was alone, and she was broken. She had always found purpose in fighting, and her father had raised her to covet one thing alone. She only knew the bonds of true family, of her two brothers and mother and father. No one depended on her, no one looked to her for protection. No matter her mistakes or shortcomings, her decisions would never impact anyone other than herself. All of that had changed when she took her place in the Aurora Basin. Suddenly, she was responsible for the protection of many, and any mistakes or brief moments of misconduct influenced everything. Each choice was a stone into a pond, with consequences cast out like ripples on a smooth surface. She seemed to make more enemies than friends, and her two closest friends seemed to disappear - one like a ghost who she hadn't seen in many seasons, and the other, she had allowed into her heart, and he had broken it. It wasn't his fault, no, it was her own naivety and inexperience that caused her heartache. But no justification lessened her pain and inner turmoil.

The snow began to fall harder, blurring her vision and clinging to her body. She slowed from her gallop, moving in a smooth trot as she shook the snow from her coat. Wetting herself to the bone and losing herself in an icy desert was a sure way to end up with hypothermia, and certainly was not the way she wanted to spend the rest of the night. Grey scanned the horizon, and a short ways up stood a natural shelter of stone. It would serve it's purpose, if only for the night, so she made her way towards it.

Due to the poor visibility, she found it difficult to see inside the formation until she was nearly upon its entryway. As she came closer, she realized someone had already beat her to the area of refuge. The girl hesitated, slowing her pace until she came to a stop. The form she saw was dark, looming, a silhouette within the shadows. "Excuse me," she began, still exposed to the elements, silver gaze tracing his contours as her eyes adjusted. She took a tentative step forward, unwilling to force herself into his space should she be unwelcome. "Do you mind if I join you? I'm a little far from home, and would like to escape the cold, even if only for a while." Her voice was gentle, lacking any desperate tones or pleading. Should he send her away, she would willingly retreat back to the Basin.

But she wasn't quite ready to go home. Not yet.
