Ki'irha

but in dreams I can hear your name, & in dreams we will meet again

Ki'irha, for a while, had imagined Ashamin standing beside her beneath an evening sky, making lighthearted advances as they laughed and enjoyed each other. He had been the one who nestled his way into a hidden part of her heart, a place she had never acknowledged simply because it was not a priority of hers. Perhaps that was why, when he tore herself from her after she hinted at her feelings, the pain was so deep. She had attempted desperately to bury the disappointment beneath spars and long journeys away from the Basin. Each attempt had failed, and still she couldn't shake the regret she held for allowing him to get so close. Especially when she laid her eyes upon his child, the product of a storyteller and a thief, she knew she could never expect him to choose her (he had so easily chosen someone else). Something in her spirit broke.

And now, for the first time, her mind was empty of all regrets.

Mesec's words were meant for her, and her alone. The way he breathed his promise even if it was only true for the moment into her fur was enough to make her blossom. She bloomed, untouched and unblemished, willing to hand herself over to the stallion the storm had led her to. Her steep neck sloped, reaching for the whispers he pressed into her skin. Standing beside her, brushed in moonlight, overwhelming each of her senses, he managed to block everything else out. He forced from her any hesitation or residual heartache. He was a temporary solution, but that didn't mean what was happening between them was any less of an answer. As he ran his muzzle across her galaxies, she forgot about the Haruspex, which proved she could walk away. It empowered her, rekindled the spark that would burn like a wildfire long after this encounter. Regardless of whatever else the Nightwind would provide to her tonight, this was a gift he would never understand. It was a gift that she needed as much as she needed the breath within her lungs, and the beat within her heart. She was Ki'irha, and she was a queen, given back her crown by an unknowing stranger.

Her eyes followed his, crowned head moving to watch his every movement. His teeth grazed her withers, and the warmth that swept through her veins convinced her that this was right. A bated breath escaped her velvet lips, and it trailed into the softest moan. She reached out one last time, looking to touch her nose upon his cheek. She inhaled him, his scent musky and nearly unfamiliar. She pulled her muzzle away, and as she did she finally broke eye contact, the chain of silver to silver falling away, as her lids fluttered shut. Each movement she made was subtle yet deliberate. Her muscles quivered, her heart raced, and her breaths grew deeper. A small step brought her forward and away, tail swaying gently, letting her body tell him what words couldn't.

The starlit girl had never belonged to anyone. She was a free mare, born beneath an open midnight sky, with a destiny yet to be unraveled. She was untethered, unanchored, unchained. But tonight, everything was different.

Tonight, she belonged to him.
