The monster within would have to wait because Mesec felt as though his entire body came to a slamming halt when his mother mentioned the monsters about to be out. His silver eyes widened as he looked back at her - barely even breathing as he stumbled over this little riddle. The only thing moving quickly was his heart, the rate picking up into a gallop. “What?” His voice was faint, his mind trying to catch up with his mouth as he tried to figure it out.
Although Mesec was worn and sad, and certainly slow to pick up on such things, he felt his mind jump to one possibility - something he had suspected before and now he latched onto the concept without any confirmation that it was true. “You mean.. Ki’irha?” He whispered the name of the star mare he had met in the Frostbreath Steppe, the only thing that he had learned about her that day, but surely his mother couldn’t be talking of anything else. There had been no one else (recently). He had travelled north again to see if he could find her, to see if this had been the outcome, but had not been able to.
Skipping right over the embarrassment that his mother knew about all of… what had happened between him and Ki’irha, he needed to clarify what he had been wondering ever since he and Ki’irha had parted ways in the Steppe. “She’s… pregnant?” He watched his mother for confirmation - both fearing that she was wrong and that she was right as his silver eyes started to shine with tears at the prospect - literally holding his breath for an answer.
A father.
He felt hope cultivating in his heart as she beamed at him, teasing him with the knowledge that she held and that he was gasping at, but the fear was rising like bile. If she was, if there was a child, Mesec couldn’t even go to see them - not like this, not with the threat lurking within him.
