Only the dead have seen the end of war.
Daybreak, as usual, found the Elephant King already awake and roaming the Edge. It was a pleasant sunrise— not so quiet that it slipped into daylight unnoticed, but not so colorful that it forewarned of an ominous day. The stallion nodded softly to himself, unconsciously doing so as he affirmed his internal assessment of the daybreak.

His ear flicked backwards as soft, metallic sounds jangled into the morning’s calm. Strange. Few were awake and moving at this hour— especially within the Lady Moon’s lands, many found their activates took them well into the night, slumbering late into the morning and missing the Sun’s entrance entirely.

A pale glint in the sky drew his attention upwards; the warm, soft sunlight glimmering on slick wings. His gaze narrowed against the glare; wings of a griffin? Was it Edgar? He blinked. No, these pale wings had paws and a mane attached. His mind worked, trying to remember— Arah’s companion. He did not know the griffin’s name, but he recognized the warm, pale body. Not many griffins graced the Edge.

His head tracked backwards, to where the wings had come from. That was the general direction from which the faint, metallic noises had sounded. Onyx and ivory legs slowly begin to move; “Come, come learn about your home little ones!” His long, sweeping strides were guided by the soft melody, distinctively Arah’s.

Finally catching sight of the pale beauty amid the trunks, his great skull dipped in greeting, navy eyes closely studying the delicately sculpted face of the lovely doe. “Arah,” he said quietly, an amused and warm grin pervading his words, “Do you mind if I join as one your pupils?”

Mbwene closely watched the beauty from beside her bonded, torn between wanting to run her trunk through those silken, soft-looking strands and waiting for the woman's answer.
