She didn’t know exactly how it happened, but it did. She was just visiting this pond, swimming on through and minding her own business like a good fish, when she had decided to snack on some hazelnuts that had dropped into the water. After that - everything was different. She knew things. Most of these things didn’t make any sense to the salmon… perhaps she was supposed to eat all of the hazelnuts? But they made her so bloated so she had to stop!
One of the things that she did know was that she had something to guard, something she needed to protect until someone else was found that could do a better job (ha! If they could!). It was an egg! Not a beautiful, round, little egg like the ones this fish would be laying soon in the rivers of the north - but a large, ugly thing. It had to stay dry, sitting safely out of the water on a nest of stones, and its surface was slightly rough and mottled with dusky colours. While she, a flawless 4 foot long salmon, rested in the water near it. Her massive red body curled slightly around the nest at the shore, almost blending in with the blood coloured waters.
There was no doubt that they would come - they always come - but she needed to make a challenge for them, otherwise she’d be guarding this thing for the rest of her life. And there were salmon eggs that needed her attention too!
She left the egg only for a moment, using her tail to knock hazelnuts from the pond and onto land nearby, before returning to guard it as her green-grey head rested just at the surface of the water - beady black eyes watching for .
Let anyone who wanted to prove they could protect this egg better than she could eat a hazelnut and then maybe they would be able to share in the knowledge she held.
