The salmon slapped her red fins happily in response to Aisling and Draevo’s greetings, appreciating the way that they referred to her as a mother. Well, she would be, as Aisling pointed out, if she had the time to go care for eggs of her own species - not babysit this one so carelessly dropped by the corner of this pond! When the young colt and his pup come bounding up and he asks a question, this queen of salmons rolled slightly in what might just be a fish way of shrugging shoulders. “Cods only know! That’s why I’m looking for a new keeper for it.”

Others come, the young skull-marked Kid and the blue Erebos asking how they could help. “You’ll see.” She grins - and salmons, with their pointy teeth and faces, have the most glorious of grins - before her beady eyes look to the others that were coming forward. More and more! Some enjoy the snacks that the salmon left out for them and she blows bubbles in the water happily each time one of them does - and  her tail flicking in the water when they don’t.

Only one actually voiced confusion over the snack and the salmon focused her black eyes on Dacianna. “What? Oh, I don’t know. But I eat them! They’re good for the brainpower.” Maybe if the mare tried them she wouldn’t be so confused all the time! After her, a friendly little filly showed up and it seemed like the salmon had gathered a good group together.

“Whale now!! You Helovians never fail to show up in droves! Love the competition, do you? Good! Good!” Contests were so boring if there weren’t enough entries! “Let’s see how you do. Most of you played along and ate the hazelnuts of knowledge I left out but it's not too late! I’ll let those snobs who didn’t before have one more chance.” Their pea-sized horse brains could need all the boost they could get! Then again, they might not affect horses at all… maybe they only give salmon extra special powers of knowledge. But it couldn’t hurt, right? Probably? The information on whether hazelnuts actually did grant powers (and whether they were poisonous to other animals) must have been contained in one of the nuts she didn’t eat from the pond.

“We’re going to play a game.” The salmon slapped her tail against the surface of water, taking delight in the attentive faces around her, as eager as she was to get this over with. “Of the three following statements, which one do you think is actually true?”

This egg didn’t need the strongest one of them to look after them, or even the smartest. It needed the luckiest. That’s what parenthood was all about - a little bit of hard work and a little bit of luck mixed together to make sure you get a decent child out of the whole thing.

A loud clearing of her throat just to make sure everyone was paying attention and then:
“a) The average airspeed velocity of an unladen griffin is 75 km/hr (47 miles/hr).”
“b) You’ll never find a rougarou that can turn into a proboscis monkey because that is the only animal they truly fear.”
“Or c) Green eyes are seen as unlucky in dragon offspring and those born with them rarely live to adulthood.”
